The furthest east of the Scandanavian countries, Finland is a vast expanse of natural beauty with huge wilderness areas, the main inhabitants being reindeer and fish! There are clear lakes surrounded by thick pine forets, deep blue skies and air so fresh you can taste it. The capital, Helsinki, on the far southern coast is a bustling modern city full of dramatic architecture and trams – visit the fish market on the harbour for a dazzling array of food produce or board a ship here to travel to other parts of Europe or take a cruise, a great city break option.
To the far north is iconic Lapland – the land of the Sami people who live with their reindeer in this vast tundra. In winter, take a holiday to Lapland to visit Santa in his home in the forest, stay in cosy log cabins and join husky sledge rides and skating and ski trips or longer dog sledding adventures. You can also see the amazing Northern Lights from here.
There are a whole range of winter sports and activity holidays available in Finland – try snow shoeing, cross country skiing, snow mobiles or dog sledding to name a few. Enjoy spas and saunas to ease your aching limbs!
Visit Finland in the summer for hiking and camping in the wilderness and forests or experience Finland’s wildlife – long weekends to see Brown Bears can be arranged, viewing from hides up close in the forest. Also to be found here are wolves, lynx, wolverines and owls deep in the pine forests amongst crystal clear lakes.
The food of Finland is at its best in the autumn when markets are full of plentiful mushrooms and colourful berries. Smoked salmon and lots of other fish are sold whole or in pastes and pates along with salami made from reindeer and many different herbs and flavourings. There are several good local cheeses too.

We found Julie on line, looking for a Northern Lights holiday and gave her our wish list and she came up trumps with a snow shoeing holiday in Finland. It was perfect – good fun, active but not too challenging. We were based in a comfortable eco camp in the Oulanka National Park surrounded by wonderful scenery, where the staff and guides were very professional, efficient and great fun.We were very impressed with the staff at Basecamp Oulanka, particularly our guide – Meiju Mustonen, Maiju was very professional and efficient but also great fun with an exceptionally good command of English. During the walks she kept us informed of the local flora & fauna, plus the geology of the area, and if she couldn’t answer a question, she checked it out and we got the answer the following day! On two of our walks we were accompanied by a trainee guide, Basho Poelman, who also impressed us – he was very competent with a steady, easy manner which inspired confidence. In fact, all the staff were very helpful and good fun and nothing was too much trouble. All in all, we had a great holiday and will happily recommend Travel with Jules, Exodus and Basecamp Oulanka!
Having read that the Northern Lights were predicted to be exceptional in 2012, my husband and I decided to find a holiday that we would both enjoy but, at the same time, maximise our chances of seeing the lights.

To top all this, we saw the Northern Lights over four nights culminating in a spectacular display on the final night. All in all, just the right holiday for us. Thank you Julie.
