

Romania
Romania is one of those places where you feel as if you are stepping back in time! Fabulous mountain scenery, untouched forests and rare wildlife surround you. Take a trip through mountain villages and medieaval settlements and enjoy the friendly hospitality of the people of Transylvania. There are some of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe here including the Gothic fairytale Bran Castle, known as ‘Dracula’s Castle‘. Stay in remote hill villages and explore Saxon settlements, visit shepherds and see local cheese being made and enjoy the hearty food and friendly tradional folk of this beautiful country.
A large country covered for the most part by the Carpathian mountains, Romania is at the meeting point of central and southeast Europe with the Lower Danube River running through it. Bird watching and natural history tours are popular around the Danube Delta. There is also a short Black Sea border to the east with some good hotels in Neptun, Euforie North or Mamaia and it’s possible to easily combine holidays with Bulgaria to the south.
Romania has 14 mountain ranges which reach over 2000m the highest point being Moldoveanu Peak at 2,544m. The Carpathian Mountains dominate the land with the surrounding Moldavian and ‘Translyvanian Plateaus. Much of the border with Serbia and Bulgaria is marked by the Danube River which flows into the Black Sea, forming the Danube Delta. This is a biodiversity World Heritage Site and covers an area of 5,800 km2. There are other important major rivers within Romania too. The Fauna of Romania includes almost 400 unique species including the Carpathian Chamois and many birds, reptiles and amphibians. There are 3,700 plant species, many rare and vulnerable.
The capital Bucharest is a great city break option and has a magnificent Antehnaeum conert hall and a music museum. There is also a National Art Museum at the Royal Palace and day trips to Bran Castle and King Carol’s Peles Castle and the city of Brasov can be accessed from here.
