Argentina

Argentina is a huge country in the southern part of Latin America, with terrain varying from tropical forests and red deserts of the north down through the Andes to Patagonia and to the tip of South America at Tierra del Fuego. Explore a wonderful country with a rich culture, sensuous tango dancing, passionate football supporters and fabulous steaks and wines!

The capital of Buenos Aires is the aviation hub with good internal flight connections and evidence of European settlers around the city in it’s architecture and culture. It is a cosmopolitan city with plazas, museums, fountains, wide streets and fabulous steak houses and restaurants. Make sure you enjoy a night at the Argentine Tango shows while you are here!

Head south to the Valdes Peninsula where you will encounter varied marine wildlife – huge penguin colonies, Southern Right Whales off shore and Elephant Seals basking on the beaches. The further south you venture the more mountain peaks and glaciers you will find, one of the countries greatest wonders is the Perito Moreno Glacier which is actually still growing!  Take a short trek on it or sail close to it.

From the Tierra del Fuego – land of fire – you can cruise on the Beagle Channel, take an expedition ship to Antarctica or sail the straights and channels of the Cape Horn to Chile. Ushuaia is the main airport and step off point here for Antarctica.  The Andes Mountains form the backbone of the South American continent and the natural border between Argentina and Chile, stretching in a long almost straight line providing one off the most scenic regions of the country.  There are over 20 gorgeous lakes in the Argentine Andes and with blue skies and snow capped mountains this is a wonderful destination for hiking and wilderness experiences.

To the north up the Andes, visit Mendoza, where a great climate combines with rich soils to produce top quality vineyards – try some wine tasting or stay on an estancia and ride the great open spaces. Horse riding is very popular here and locals use the horses to work the land on their ranches (estancias). The Pampas are vast fertile grasslands covering more than 285,000 sq miles and home to huge cattle ranches producing fabulous quality beef.  The closer you get north to the Tropic of Capricorn you will find forests and gorges, cactus deserts and the magnificent Iguazu Falls on the borders with Paraguay and Brazil.

Visit Argentina year round but the southern half is best enjoyed between October and April with peak months of December to February. British passport holders do not currently require a visa to visit Argentina and there are no compulsary health requirements.
