Solo Travel
With many years experience myself of solo travel I know only too well the problems associated with booking a holiday, especially as a solo traveller! Travelling in Africa I soon learnt a few tricks … always wear a wedding ring, talk about your husband, etc., to avoid unwanted attention as you sit alone in a beach bar wanting to watch the sunset in peace trying to avoid being pestered by the local ‘beach boys’!! Another problem often facing solo travellers is the dreaded ‘single supplement’ on hotel rooms which often seems to double the price of the holiday. Having first hand experience as a single female I am very happy to help you find a suitable holiday, I have a lot of solo ladies who book regularly with me (and men of course!). Even if you just want some winter sun or a summer break and need me to find hotels who will waive the single supplement or have any special offers, let me take the worry about of booking it all for you.
There are many reasons why people travel on their own, most really enjoy it – meeting new people, enjoying new culture and relishing in the challenge of independent travel. So even if you are an experienced world traveller who would like a tailor made holiday, perhaps with a private guide for example to explore the rainforests of Madagascar or trek Machu Pichu, enjoy a one on one walking safari in Africa or travel by train around India then I can help with that. Let me book your flights, accommodation, travel arrangements, maybe you want to hire a car and do your own thing? That’s all no problem!
If you are not used to travelling alone but want to embark on a round the world trip or spend your redundancy money trekking round South-East Asia because you wish you had done it when you were younger, I can arrange that too. Gone are the time when ‘GAP year’ travel was just for those at University! ‘Adult GAPs’ are becoming more and more popular and I can team you up with other adventurers joining groups which are fantastic value for money too.
There are lots of options for spending some time with local families and in villages taking part in volunteer projects if you want to learn more about the culture around you and give something back to your host country when you travel. Some holidays such as expeditions to Antarctica offer the opportunity to become involved in conservation projects such as Penguin population mapping.
Long haul, consider pre-booking things like hop on hop off buses in Australia and New Zealand or travel passes, for example in Europe there are options for rail cards that allow you to spend weeks using the trains as you wish.
If you want to join a group then there are endless options for escorted tours and sightseeing. You may have a particular interest such as Art, Music or Botany, to name just a few. I can find you an escorted tour group with a knowledgeable guide who specialises in your particular area of interest. Take a look at the Special Interest Groups section or ask me for advice. I know of companies who run escorted tours specifically just for single travellers. Some are travelling alone because they have no choice, others travel on their own as they like different holidays to their spouses. Whatever the reason, there are usually no single supplements imposed and you have the services of an experienced tour leader who makes sure everyone is involved in the group and doesn’t feel excluded. Ask me also about single sex holidays.
If you are a single traveller wanting to join an activity or adventure holiday, then look no further! As a specialist in adventure and wildlife travel, I can find you the perfect activity holiday for you to join with and some of these group departures are designated as ‘solo departures’ and will be made up of mainly solo like minded travellers. There are group holidays for walking, cycling, sightseeing, safaris, sailing and culture. Some groups are made up of mostly solo travellers so you are sharing your experience with other singles along the way.
If you are a single traveller wanting to go on an African Safari, I can find you a fabulous group safari to join, depending which country you would like to visit or if there is any particular wildlife experience you would like to do. Having done ‘solo Africa’ myself for many years, this is my specialist area so please don’t feel intimidated or worried about travelling to Africa alone, once you get there you will feel anything but as the friendly people of Africa will make you feel at home straight away!
If you want to travel quite soon and join a group holiday as a single traveller, take a look at the late availability on my offers page or give me a call with your dates and preferred destination and I will find a departure to fit your requirements. Take a look through the experiences pages for some inspiration and get in touch. All the suggested itineraries can be done as a solo tailor made holiday or you may be able to join a group.
